It has become increasingly clear that our mind and thoughts can influence our physical health and assist us in avoiding or recovering from illness, surgery and other medical treatments. As examples:
- Hypnosis uses the power of the unconscious to reduce or eliminate pain during childbirth and surgery, speed recovery from surgery and bone fractures, as well as to reduce nausea, vomiting and help control pain following surgery.
- In his book, Love, Medicine and Miracles, Bernie Seigel, M.D., a surgeon, describes how, during surgery, he successfully instructed his patients to reduce their blood pressure, heart rate, and even blood flow to the surgery site
- Using a special electronic device, individuals can learn to use biofeedback to gain control over certain bodily functions, including heart rate, muscle tension, and skin temperature.
- Scientists at the Menninger Clinic studied the ability of Swami Rama, an India yoga master, to voluntarily control body processes that are normally considered to be non-voluntary. He was observed changing the temperature of the palm of his hand by 10 degrees, turning one side red and the other side blue as well as stopping his heart (actually a fibrillation where the heart beats about 300 beats/minute).
- There is a long history in many cultures of individuals walking barefoot over a bed of hot coals or stones without burning their skin (Firewalking).
- In the context of a research project, within a short period of time, subjects who are instructed to increase the number of red blood cells have demonstrated the ability to do so.
- In “blind tests” individuals given placebos that they believe to be medication often have a similar physical reaction or healing response as those who receive the actual medication.
Clearly, our mind, intuitive and spiritual sides have the potential to positively impact body functioning, health and healing, although this impact will vary from individual to individual. The audio files in this series have been designed to help you utilize your mind, wisdom and unconscious to assist in healing your body and becoming a proactive partner in medical treatments.
